About Me
Firstly, I am not a car-dealer. By profession I am a hospital surgical consultant.
Cars, specifically BMWs, are my hobby. I have enthusiastically owned BMWs for close to 25 years now and have been a BMW Car Club GB member for nearly as long.
I have owned many 'interesting' BMWs over the years and at the time of writing have three 'core' cars in my collection plus my wife's BMW which are NOT up for sale.
(If you come to view a car I am selling please don't ask if I want to sell them...as they are not for sale and as the saying goes: "Refusal often offends"!)
The 'core members' include a 1990 E30 M3 'late model 215bhp' car, a 1989 E32 735i reckoned to be the lowest mileage one in existence(!) and an Alpina B3 Coupe - the latter soon to be featured here.
However, my other allied hobby is car detailing. To that end I have an agreement (with my wife!) that I'm allowed to buy one car at a time for the purposes of this hobby which must then be sold! As a condition of this agreement, I'm not allowed to make a loss on the purchase and subsequent sale! However, as stated above, I don't make my living out of buying and selling cars so there is no pressure on me to have a 'turnover'of cars. I can sit and spend many months looking for the single 'right car' and I don't have to sell it in a hurry...I just can't buy another until the previous one has sold!
Any car I sell will both belong, and be registered to me, at my address.
As I am no more than a car enthusiast, selling as a private individual, I cannot offer warranties on cars. What I can say is with the many years of experience of owning BMWs I wouldn't have bought the car myself if I thought it was a 'lemon'!
A word on 'warranties': Warranties can be bought by individuals themselves. Often dealers will offer warranties for a period as part of the deal, or try to sell you them for an additional cost. Just be aware of what you're actually getting or buying! Whilst there are some very good warranties (BMW's own as an example), some of them are barely worth the paper they are printed on! Close inspection of what is actually covered may seem impressive...closer scrutiny will reveal most of the items are things which never actually go wrong anyway! And some very expensive items which 'go' with monotonous regularity are excluded.
I have always driven and will continue to buy what might be considered 'older' BMWs because I believe they represent such good value! Approximately a year ago I came very close to buying either a one year old E46 M3 or 330i Sport Coupe at my local BMW Dealership. The two cars were close to £40K and £30K respectively having both already lost about £6K of their new value in one year with only 6000 miles on the clock! A quick reference to predicted depreciation confirmed that this staggering depreciation would continue (if not accelerate!) over the next few years. I sat there and thought; "What the hell am I doing here?! I'm making the same mistakes that the majority of the 'new car buying public' make - those which keep the new car industry making such huge profits! And I should know better!"
Of course, things can go wrong with an older car but rarely to the tune of £6K ...consistently ... every year! This is the not so 'hidden' cost to the 'new car buyer' which so few seem to see, or wish to see. All well and good for the car industry, all well and good for me and all well and good for you, if you've got this far!
People worry about the running costs of BMW ownership: parts and servicing, petrol, insurance etc... If you are worried, please read the articles'BMW Servicing' and 'The Fuel Calculation'. You can't drive a car without insurance and a high insurance group is well...a high insurance group! However, insurance is particularly punitive for younger drivers. Sadly, at 42 years old I can no longer consider myself a 'younger driver', but I do have the benefit of being able to own and drive cars which haven't been subject to abuse and skimped maintenance by previous owners who couldn't really afford to look after the car appropriately. I don't buy the same cars as the 'Saxo/Corsa enthusiasts'. As an example, fully comprehensive insurance for me on a 740i (Group 19 car) is comfortably under £400/year. How much less would it be on a Ford Mondeo? ... I don't know - however I know for sure it won't be free! So setting the two cars against each other the difference, as far as I'm concerned, isn't even worth enquiring about!
Lastly, when I describe cars I try to be as honest and objective as I can. It serves nobody's interests to have their time wasted by making arrangements to view a car only to be let down by woefully inaccurate descriptions. I know this because I've 'been there' many, many times! I particularly dislike the common cliches used in car advertisements: "Mint", "Immaculate", "First to see will buy"! I don't believe any car is "Mint" from the second it rolls off the production-line. "Immaculate" is a similarly vacuous term. "Concours" is perhaps a more meaningful statement but you'd want to see evidence. "First to see will buy"? ... Why?! The first to see may be a complete timewaster, or they might just not like the car in the flesh! And that's fair enough!
